Domesticated
Artist Spotlight
October 4, 2019 - January 9, 2019
Cova Cowork, Columbus, OH
My work is inspired by every day life in my own home, which is greatly influenced by my mindfulness practice. A symbol that I am frequently drawn to is that of my cat, Dahlia. As a companion, she teaches me much about living mindfully in an indirect way, and, as a domesticated animal, she represents some of what I contemplate in my creative practice. She is content indoors yet fascinated by what she can sense through the window, which causes me to ponder my own routine existence in our home, its relationship to my thought patterns, and the difference between my internal and external experiences. The images I create are real moments that are abstracted beyond immediate recognition with paint and mixed media collage. As viewers mentally move through bright colors, repeated patterns, and layered material, they may or may not piece together the semblance of a moment. Either way, it is my hope that viewers will find peace and stillness as they embrace the experience of observing.
βOne way we show our love for our city is by featuring a local artist's work every few months. This opportunity comes at no cost to the artist. Our galleries are open to the public and most pieces are for sale. Most spotlights are accompanied by a unique event to further highlight the artist's talent.β
